What the SIELE is, and how it differs from a pass-or-fail exam
SIELE stands for Servicio Internacional de Evaluación de la Lengua Española. It is an electronic certification: you sit it on a computer at an authorized center, on almost any date rather than on a handful of fixed ones, and the result comes back in weeks rather than months.
It does not pass or fail you. It reports where your Spanish sits on the scale, skill by skill, and the certificate is valid for five years.
It also recognizes the different varieties of Spanish, so the Spanish you actually speak — Mexican, Argentinian, Peninsular — is not treated as a mistake. For an American learner whose Spanish comes from Latin America, that matters.

The full version measures all four skills. There are also shorter versions that combine only some of them, which is worth checking against what the institution asking for the certificate actually requires.

Texts and questions on screen, against the clock. Straightforward to prepare alone, and the section that most rewards steady vocabulary work between lessons.

Speaking into a microphone is its own skill
People assume the recorded format makes the spoken section easier than a face-to-face exam. In practice it does the opposite for most candidates. There is no examiner nodding, no follow-up question to lean on and no natural rhythm to hide in — just a prompt, a countdown and your own voice.
What separates a good recording from a poor one is not vocabulary. It is being able to start immediately, structure an answer out loud and fill the time without drifting into English or into silence.
That is trainable, and it is exactly what a one-on-one lesson trains: you speak for most of twenty-five minutes, you get corrected on the spot, and you stop being surprised by the sound of your own Spanish.
How SIELE preparation works here
Because the exam places you rather than passing you, preparation is about performing at the top of your range on the day.
- Take the free level test A teacher tells you roughly where on the scale you would land today, so you know whether it is worth sitting the exam now or in three months.
- Decide which version you need The full test covers all four skills; shorter combinations exist. Ask whoever is requesting the certificate which one they accept before you book.
- Rehearse the recorded format Prompt, countdown, speak. Your teacher runs it the way the exam runs it, so the timer stops being the thing that throws you.
- Push the level, not just the accuracy Safe short sentences score below what you can do. Lessons work on producing longer, more complex Spanish that still holds together.
- Register at an authorized center Dates, fees and centers are handled by the SIELE organization. We do not register candidates and we are not an exam center.
The SIELE is the safer choice when you do not know your level
You register for a permanent diploma at one specific level and you either reach it or you lose the attempt. The SIELE has no level to choose: you sit it, and it reports what you can do.
That makes it the sensible first certificate for most people, and a useful checkpoint even if a permanent diploma is the long-term goal. The five-year validity is the trade-off, and for a job application or a university admission that is usually plenty.
