What a Spanish proficiency test actually measures
A Spanish proficiency test measures what you can do with the language in four separate skills: reading, listening, writing and speaking. It does not measure how many words you know, and that catches people out.
The scale behind most of these exams is the Common European Framework, the A1 to C2 ladder. A level is a description of tasks you can handle, which is why two people with the same vocabulary can land two levels apart depending on how much they have spoken.
That is the practical reason to know which exam you are aiming at before you start studying. The material barely changes; the way you are asked to use it changes completely.
The four Spanish exams worth knowing about
Two of them certify your Spanish for life or work, and two of them are about college credit in the United States. Pick by what you need the paper for.
- DELE The official diploma from the Instituto Cervantes, issued on behalf of the Spanish government. One level at a time, from A1 to C2, on a set number of fixed dates each year. It does not expire. DELE preparation
- SIELE Electronic, sat on a computer at an authorized center on almost any day of the year, with results back in weeks rather than months. It reports a level rather than a pass, recognizes the different varieties of Spanish, and is valid for five years. SIELE preparation
- AP Spanish The College Board exam taken by high school students in the United States, in two versions: Language and Culture, and Literature and Culture. A good score can earn college credit or placement, depending on the college. AP Spanish preparation
- CLEP Spanish Also from the College Board, and built for adults: you sit an exam instead of taking the class, and your college decides what credit it grants. The route people use when they already speak some Spanish and want it to count. CLEP Spanish preparation
The speaking section is where candidates lose the points they could have kept
Reading and listening you can drill alone, and plenty of people do it well. Writing you can practice and check. Speaking is the one skill that does not improve by being studied, because the thing being graded is what comes out of your mouth under time pressure, in front of a stranger, with no chance to go back and fix it.
It is also the section with the least material available, since a rehearsed monologue is not what any of these exams is asking for. What they want is an answer to a question you did not see coming, in reasonable Spanish, at conversational speed.
That is the part a teacher can train and a book cannot, and it is the honest reason this section of the site exists.
None of this is exam-only teaching. The preparation is ordinary speaking practice aimed at a date, run by the same teachers you would have if you came here just to learn Spanish online.
How to prepare for a Spanish exam without losing months
The order matters more than the hours. Most wasted preparation is spent at the wrong level or on the wrong skill.
- Find out your real level first Take the free level test and talk to a teacher before you register for anything. Registering for a level you are not at is the single most expensive mistake in this whole process.
- Pick the exam that matches the reason A permanent diploma, a fast certificate, college credit or high school credit are four different jobs. The exam pages explain which is which.
- Learn the format until it is boring Every one of these exams has a fixed shape. Knowing exactly what the next task will be frees your attention for the Spanish instead of the instructions.
- Spend most of your lesson time speaking The written parts you can work on alone between lessons. Use the time with a teacher on the thing you cannot do alone, and ask to be interrupted and corrected.
- Register through the official organization We do not enroll anyone and we are not a test center. Dates, fees and locations come from the body that runs the exam, and only from there.
What Spanish exam preparation costs
Plans run from $84 a month for one lesson a week up to $264 a month for four. Every plan is one-on-one, 25 minutes, with a qualified native teacher. Book any teacher, any available slot. No weekly caps.
There is no separate exam-preparation price and no minimum term. It is the same one-on-one plan as everyone else; what changes is what your teacher spends the lesson on, and how hard they push on the speaking section.

Questions people ask before choosing an exam
Which Spanish proficiency test should I take?
It depends on what the certificate is for. If you need permanent, official proof of your Spanish, the DELE is the one that does not expire. If you need a result quickly and on your own schedule, the SIELE is electronic and reports a level. If the goal is college credit in the United States, look at AP Spanish or CLEP instead.
Do I have to know my level before I register?
For the DELE you do, because you register for one specific level and you either reach it or you do not. The SIELE places you instead of passing or failing you, so it is the safer choice when you are unsure. Either way, take the free level test first and get an honest read from a teacher.
